As of January 1, 2026, the paper-based Hungarian Social Security Booklet (TB-kisk\u00f6nyv\/TB-booklet) was discontinued and replaced by the electronic e-TB Booklet. Eight months have now passed since the transition, and one of the main benefits of the new system is already clear: electronic data access has become possible, and employers can finally return the pink paper booklets they have been storing for years.<\/p>\n

When Should Employers Return the Social Security Booklets?<\/h2>\n

At many companies, employees’ TB booklets are still lined up in HR filing cabinets because employers assume they should only be returned when the employee leaves the company.<\/p>\n

However, the legislation states that previously submitted booklets must be handed over to the employee no later than the termination of the employment relationship. This does not mean that employers are required to keep them until that point.<\/p>\n

Therefore, employers looking to reduce administrative burdens can safely return the TB booklets they have been storing to their employees now.<\/p>\n

It is important, however, that employers make a copy of the booklet before handing it back. The employee should sign either the copy itself or a separate acknowledgment of receipt confirming that the original document has been returned. This documentation should then be retained in the employee’s personnel file.<\/p>\n

Individuals can review their own records electronically. Through the e-TB system and the patient health record services, users can check their insurance history and a significant portion of the data related to health insurance benefits.<\/p>\n
