What is a period-end close?

A period-end close is the closing and reconciliation of the bookkeeping for a period (a month, a quarter or a year): determining the general ledger balances, reconciling the sub-ledgers with the general ledger, and dealing with the missing items (accruals, depreciation). This is what gives a reliable basis for the financial statements and the reports.
