What is the difference between an audit and due diligence?

An audit gives an independent opinion on closed financial statements, within a statutory framework. Due diligence takes place before a transaction (an acquisition or an investment) and reveals the risks of the target according to the client’s requirements. It has no prescribed form and it delivers a risk report rather than an opinion.
